A Bill of Materials (BOM) represents a pre-kitted item that was previously created through a Project Kitting request. Once a BOM is built, the system treats it as a single SKU made up of multiple component SKUs.
If you no longer want inventory stored or fulfilled as a built-out kit, you can explode the BOM, which will de-kit the item and return the inventory back to its original component SKUs as single units.
Note: Instructions for creating a BOM can be found here:
What Does “Explode BOM” Mean?
Exploding a BOM:
- Breaks down a pre-kitted SKU into its individual component SKUs
- Reduces (decrements) the quantity of the kitted BOM SKU
- Adds inventory back to the original component SKUs based on the BOM configuration
- Submits a project request to the warehouse team to physically de-kit the items
This is commonly used when:
- You no longer want to ship or store items as a kit
- You need to fulfill orders using the individual components instead
- Packaging or sales strategies change after kitting has already been completed
How to Explode a BOM
Follow the steps below to de-kit a pre-kitted BOM item:
- Log into the Kase App
- Navigate to Products
3. Locate and select the BOM (kitted) SKU
4. On the BOM product page, select “Explode BOM” from the left-hand menu
5. Enter the number of kits you want to explode (de-kit)
6. Select the Project Deadline and Submit the request by selecting “Create Project”
7. It will then take you to the project page where you can enter any special instructions you’d like included
What happens After You Submit
Once submitted:
- A Project request is created and sent to the warehouse team
- The specified number of kits will be physically pulled and de-kitted
- The system will:
- Decrease the inventory count of the BOM SKU
- Increase inventory counts for each original component SKU according to the BOM quantities
Inventory updates will reflect once the project has been completed by the warehouse.
Important Notes & Best Practices
- You can only explode available BOM inventory
- Exploding a BOM is a physical warehouse process, not an instant system change
- Component SKUs will return to inventory in their original unit configuration
- If you are unsure how many kits to explode or how this impacts active orders, contact your Customer Service Representative before submitting the request
